Our Story

Our Story

Hi there, we’re Belinda and Jason Hagan, welcome to McIvor Farm Foods…

We are third generation farmers working the land with our two children and small team on our family farm in Tooborac Victoria, about 1 hour north of Melbourne.

We started our lifelong careers in Agriculture, in industrial agriculture; high input, high output and the focus on profit at all costs. After a family health issue & passing of a close family member in a short amount of time we began to question many aspects of lifestyle, food, industrialised systems; the cost to the environment, animals, food….It was to be a pivotal point in our lives and became a catalyst for lifestyle, values and career changes.  This is where the story of McIvor Farm Foods began.

We call ourselves ‘soil farmers’ who manage to run pigs across our property because our focus is on regenerating the land to create a healthier earth, happier animals and better choices for people.

By buying from us – – – you support a local farm and family

Our Farm

Our Farm

On McIvor Farm, we use a farming method called ‘Regenerative Farming’ which means we are focused on restoring the landscape’s function as a healthy ecosystem that results in sustainable production for animals and plants as well as an improved natural resource base that has a healthy lifecycle with increased biodiversity and greater resilience.

Our farming practices are both simple and complex. The simple answer is soil, we work from the ground up! The long answer is working on complex biological, symbiotic relationships between soil, environment, animal and people.

Our Livestock

Our Livestock

ur herd of mostly Berkshire pigs, which are an old breed of pig, who act like natural-four legged ploughs to turn the soil and add nutrients back into the paddocks they live in. We plant seasonal crops like daikon radishes, grasses and grains that carry water down into the soil to create the ideal conditions for bugs, worms and critters to grow. The pigs are moved into these plant filled paddocks to dig up and eat these plants for nourishment and fun. As a result they turn the soil for us and add organic matter back into the soil for the next crop to grow.

Our Meat

Our Meat

Berkshire Pork - has been described as the Waghu of Pork... the marbling within the muscle gives our pork a delicious eating experience and keeps the meat succulent.

Some of the more visual observations when you first see our meat are:

  • The increased FAT coverage - Berkshire Pigs are slow growing and send their entire life outside - this does mean that they deposit more Fat (especially in the winter months) - but the fat is flavour!
  • OH - this FAT layer gives you the best CRACKLE!!!

  • Black hair in the skin - oh golly gosh...this is not going to hurt you! Also when pigs spend their entire life outside (not in a temperature controlled shed) their hair can be a little more coarse which makes it harder to de-hair them. Believe me when the Skin Crackles up - you probably won't even notice the small amount of balck hair

PORK needs to be cooked to medium (not rare and NOT OVERCOOKED) - still with some pink juices in the meat.

We utilise the service of Be Cool Refrigerated Freight Company - we cannot accept any responsibility once the boxes are delivered to the Be Cool depot.

If you aren't happy with the product received - you need to send a photo and a description of the product & packaging within 24 hours of receiving the Order and why you are not happy.
