It should be easy - just trust what a website is saying. After all you've got some pictures of cows, some nice green fields and the marketing is ON POINT!
But unfortunately if you really want to support a local farm, it can be harder than you think to find a legitimate provider.
In short, if they grow, breed and raise animals, they're a farm.
If you're buying in boxed meat and reselling it... you're not!
Farmers are still getting paid for their animals right? So what's the difference?
Yes, farmers still get paid, but if you're trying to support farmers directly, then that's exactly what we help you do!
We don't buy meat from farmers and add a mark up, and we also don't force farms to sell for a certain price. When you buy from Farmer To Fridge, you can be sure the farmers are setting the products, AND the prices.
If you're (unknowingly) supporting a wholesaler, there is a conflict of interest between the farm and wholesaler. The wholesaler wants the biggest margin they can make, which means either charging YOU more, or paying the customer less.
Real farmers have to sell a whole animal, they don't have huge freezers or places to store 'leftover' meat. So therefore if the "farm" you're buying from lets you 'pick and choose' your cuts, there's a pretty good chance they are NOT a farm.
It comes down to the breakdown of cuts in a side of beef.. you simply can't get 'enough' of the prime steaks to make a 'by the cut' model sustainable in most situations. Often when a customer buys a 'by the cut' steak box, these larger 'fake farms' are simply 'topping up' their boxes with meat from a wholesaler or abattoir.
